Saturday September 14th Bamburgh Borders Fungus Group

We will meet at 10.30am in the large free car park just below Bamburgh Castle on the landward side, NU18363490. Enter from the B1342 / B1340 Links Road. OS Landranger map 75 the aim is to visit the nearby sand dunes in search of the specialised fungi that should be found growing there. Late in the year on a previous visit a very small un-identified earth star was found and we would really like to refind this species to find out what it is. As well as the sand dunes there are wet boggy areas and some mixed woodland. Stout footwear and protective clothing depending on the weather that day will be required. Bring a packed lunch, sufficient liquids and if we are lucky – sun cream.

Saturday September 21st Bedburn Cath Gillie

From the A68 travelling south turn right after Witton Le Wear for Hamsterley village From the A68 travelling North turn left for Hamsterley before the river. In the centre of the village in Hamsterley turn right ( near toilets) and follow the road taking the first right again signed Howlea onto Howlea lane. Follow this lane over a bridge and as you go up the hill from the bridge past a few cottages – look for a turning on the right over a cattle grid at the farm entrance for Carrwood Hill Farm Park on the grass verges – there will be a sign here to guide you! Meeting at 11am – We plan to foray along Harthope beck which has been fruitful for us in the past, It’s a circular route mainly along the beck side but we do cross the beck and there is only one Bridge and a ford so wear wellingtons or waterproof boots if you don’t want to walk back to the bridge, although if the beck is in flood we may all have to use the bridge! The plan is to return to the cars for a late lunch so that those that need to go early can do so and then Foray in Low Burnlea wood near the Bedburn beck for as long as time allows
